Welcome to the Orton-Gillingham in the Classroom Website!

My name is Barbara Zelinske, Director of Teacher Training at The Reading Center / Dyslexia Institute of MN. I am Fellow certified with the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and a recipient of the National Honor Rollís Outstanding American Teachers Award. I have been training teachers to use the Orton-Gillingham reading approach for the past several years. Iíve tutored on a one to one basis as well as small group, taught reading in the public and private schools, and have provided district in-services in reading and spelling.

If you are currently using the Orton-Gillingham approach, you are aware that it lends itself very well to one-to-one instruction and with appropriate planning and preparation, to small and large groups. I use the Orton-Gillingham approach every day and canít imagine teaching without it.

Based on my experience teaching using Orton-Gillingham in a variety of settings, I have published teaching resources that will significantly decrease your preparation time allowing more time for direct instruction.

The infusion of Orton-Gillingham into any reading program will enhance reading and spelling instruction for all students. Your students will gain a solid understanding of the structure of the English Language if taught using the Orton-Gillingham approach. The comment most often heard by students is, "Why didn't someone teach me this before?" Not only do reading and spelling scores increase but self-esteem increases as well.
